For the indication of proton radiotherapy in pediatric patients, a recommendation from a pediatric oncologist is required. The most common indications for proton radiotherapy for tumors in children are:

  • Medulloblastoma, PNET: postoperative RT – craniospinal axis + boost
  • Craniopharyngioma: postoperative radiotherapy, radical surgical resection contraindicated in the case of recurrence.
  • Gliomas with a low degree of malignancy: inoperable oligodendroglioma and astrocytomas; radical radiotherapy in the case of impossibility to perform radical resection; postoperative radiotherapy in R1 or R2 resection – strictly individual, systemic therapy is preferred
  • Ependymoma: postoperative radiotherapy, radiotherapy of recurrent tumors to the extent according to the stage of disease
  • Germ cell tumors: to the extent according to the relevant protocol (independently or after chemotherapy)
  • High-grade gliomas: recurrent tumors after previous radiotherapy, primarily in unfavorable locations in selected patients
  • Chordomas, chondrosarcomas: postoperative/radical radiotherapy
  • Soft tissue sarcomas (in unfavorable locations): to the extent according to the relevant protocol
  • Any other tumors as specified by a multidisciplinary team (esthesioneuroblastoma, neuroblastoma, nephroblastoma, malignant lymphomas, and others).
